Here’s a clip of Julie performing Impossibly Beautiful (composed by Julie Feeney and taken form “Pages”) at The Therapy Sessions in January 2012. We’d like to thank Julie again for playing, and for letting us use this wonderful footage captured by Mark O’Connor. We hope you enjoy it, and if you do, please share it.

Just off Camden street beside the Simon Community shop there is a rather beautiful black tiled wall that must be there some time now, in an amazing turn of luck the good people at the charity said it could be used for a piece in conjunction with the FirstFortnight festival as long as it had that something special. From talking to Maser quite a bit I know he prefers that special place to do something occasionally for the right reason that cuts across everything else and delivers that one message with a sense of grandeur and great first impression. He doesn’t really need to do this as much these days with the legend song drifting on the wind but there’s still a good deal to prove and this is a perfect oppurtunity. In a sense Masers piece ‘U ARE ALIVE’ caps it all off for FirstFortnight, it’s the simplest of mission statements to anyone who gets distracted enough to see the message which won’t be too difficult considering it’s size. “It’s Ballymun blue” it had all come back to him when we all realised that the Yellow of the shop sat very well with the surrounding blue, nothing like primarys to catch your eye and the message is so incredibly clear and succinct it was a definite moment feeling that the project idea had at last jumped off the paper version and onto the physical wall.

We had a long brilliant day of talking about everything, everything from the future back to the past, Terry from Simon Community the shop on the corner dropped out Kit Kats and tea to keep us warm, she dropped some lines of video too that simplified it all, Eoin worked all day filming and his new 4 month old Lurcher ‘Norris’ hung around like a calming influence, people genuinely stopped and said “Thanks” -they took the message onboard like a conversation which in fact, it was, adopted it as theirs and walked away happier. Some days aren’t going to work out for you, some days will and with the help of Eithne, JP and especially Sarah Bredin, the whole day and result was a success, a landmark for the whole festival to be proud of. the message simple and heartfelt.

If you intend to mark the walls say something that makes sense, make me think.
This time he’s done a piece on wellington Quay and on Temple lane south a fairly familiar sauce bottle that asks about labels. we spoke for a few minutes about how things are and why it was coincidental doing this piece for FirstFortnight

Choosing to remain completely faceless and unidentifiable, Canvaz is the artist in First Fortnight that we know the least about.
He was thinking about the ballerina’s balloon being black initially as a black balloon is known to symbolise depression in dreams. Before he painted this piece in the middle of the night on New Year’s Day he decided to make it red instead. When asked he told me that a black balloon carrying the ballerina away would have given out the wrong message: that would mean the depression won.
So the balloon is red, the girl is beautiful but she’s bowing down, bowing out – maybe even just for a minute, or a second, or a day, or a few weeks – who knows.
So, with Canvaz choosing to remain apart from our interpretation of his work, I can only tell you what I see.
The First Fortnight logo in the corner frames the gorgeous dancer and her balloon in a context of honesty about difficulty- to me anyway. If more of us lose our fear of showing weakness, and our fear of making people uncomfortable, there will be less mental health problems – and the ones that do prevail will be less consuming.
So if you have to duck down, to stretch, to hide your head because you see nothing but grey around you, please let a friend or family member know and let them be your red balloon that’ll keep you from sinking so low that you can’t get back up again. The more friends we’re honest with, the more red balloons there will be to carry us up and onward when we find ourselves dredging the bottom of our sometimes lonely souls. Honesty brings people together. Open up and you’ll help others to do the same.
Thank you Canvaz.
